The Misconception of Book to Movie Adaptations

Many of the popular Young Adult novels are now being made into major films. The Twilight Saga, Beautiful Creatures, The Hunger Games, City of Bones, and Warm Bodies are all current examples. While it is very enjoying to see the words on the pages become live actions on a big screen, many people miss out on the wonderfully written story that it once was. I am the type of person who absolutely has to read the book before the movie comes out. (Or at least before I watch it.) So, that explains why I have been carrying around the book Beautiful Creatures at school. (The movie comes out Thursday, February 14.) I have received many comments from "non-readers" saying, "Oh isn't that a movie?" Yes. They are correct. "Well, then why are you reading the book? The movie will be better." As I laugh to myself and shrug off their ignorance, I realize that many people do tend to think that way. Its actually really common for people in my particular school to have that mindset. While movies are fun and action-packed, they do not relay the same information that a reader is able to interpret from the words in a book. I have had a couple of friends who have watched The Hunger Games without reading the book. They came to me with excitement about how they enjoyed the movie! After informing them of it actually being a trilogy, they were shocked, and then filled with more excitement. They wanted to read the book, and after, informed me that they loved it. Now, that was a positive situation. I love when I come across many people who, after watching a movie based on a book, find themselves wanting to read the book itself, and absolutely enjoying it. Sadly, that is not the case for everyone. Most people are just not too fond of reading. And don't get me wrong, I totally understand that! However, the only time I will get offended is if a person has the audacity to insult me and my decision the read the book, rather than just watching the movie. I AM a reader for a reason, you know. Anyways, aside from that, I am honestly enjoying the novel Beautiful Creatures! Hopefully the movie delivers the story successively!

As I have previously said in my last post, I apologize if I have offended anyone, as that was, and never is, my intention.

Thanks for reading :)
