So, I have come across several English teachers who have openly discouraged and trashed the teen "romance" novels that I, along with millions of other teenagers, take pride into reading. Why do older generations find it necessary to oppress modern day Young Adult books? Now, don't get me wrong, I am not generalizing here. I do understand that not all teachers are this way. In fact, my freshmen year English teacher encouraged us to read the Hunger Games trilogy! She loved Young Adult books. However, I have noticed many other adults who are the complete opposite. While I was at this college preparatory meeting on Friday, a former graduate of Harvard University was giving us a presentation on the school, and her experience there as an undergraduate. (The presentation was extremely well done, btw.) On one of her slides, she began to talk about the magnificent library that they have there. She discussed how they had a wide variety of amazing books, EXCEPT "trashy romance novels", with a mocking laugh at the end. Now, I'm not sure if this is just me, but I kind of took this to offense. I know what you may be thinking. "It's not a big deal!" Or, "You're totally over exaggerating." No, it may not be. And yes, I just might be over exaggerating a bit. But I have gotten several hints from past English teachers that were not fond of the reading material that the younger generation seems to be reading now a days. And, considering the classics that they force upon us for analytically based assignments, they'd rather us read old classics then those that we read today. It's as if they find these books unqualified to be considered literature. While everyone is entitled to their own opinion, I find it rather appalling, and certainly not true. I have no problems reading classics. Some of them are actually really great! But some English teachers make it seem as though if we are not reading a classic, then we might as well be reading "trash." I'm into Young Adult, Fiction, Contemporary, Fantasy and Paranormal Romance, which are all wonderful genres of books written by very talented authors! And although the stories may not be real, I am enjoying my myself, while at the same time increasing my vocabulary. (According to statistics.) There is absolutely nothing wrong with that. Praise to the "trashy" and entertaining Romance Novels!
I hope I have not offended anyone, as that was never my intention. This is just my honest opinion.
Thanks for reading :)
