Synopsis: When you can’t trust yourself, who can you believe?
Everything about Anna’s life is a secret. Her father works for the Branch at the helm of its latest project: monitoring and administering treatments to the four genetically altered boys in the lab below their farmhouse. There’s Nick, Cas, Trev . . . and Sam, who’s stolen Anna’s heart. When the Branch decides it’s time to take the boys, Sam stages an escape, killing the agents sent to retrieve them.
Anna is torn between following Sam or staying behind in the safety of her everyday life. But her father pushes her to flee, making Sam promise to keep her away from the Branch, at all costs. There’s just one problem. Sam and the boys don’t remember anything before living in the lab—not even their true identities.
Now on the run, Anna soon discovers that she and Sam are connected in more ways than either of them expected. And if they’re both going to survive, they must piece together the clues of their past before the Branch catches up to them and steals it all away.
My Review/Thoughts: Ah, where do I even start? This novel was absolutely addicting! I could not put it down. (Okay, I lied. I HAD to put it down to do my homework.) But that's not the point. This book is thrilling, sexy, action-packed, and even romantic. I loved the story from the beginning, all the way until the last page. Anna, the protagonist, was a favorite character of mine. She was brave, assertive, and downright bad ass for a girl who had to decide whether to leave her father or not in a midst of two minutes! My most favorite part of the novel has to be THE BOYS!
Sam: Now, Sam is the leader of the group. A dark, sexy, kick-ass leader that is. You see, him and Anna have this thing, but then they don't because it's kind of complicated, but then again it's not. You see where I'm going here? No? Okay. At first he seems really distant and cold, but as the story unfolds, you begin to see his more caring side.
Trev: Trev is the wise one of the group, and was considered to be Anna's best friend. He has a photographic memory, which makes him handy in helping Anna feel better with old quotes that no one remembers.
Cas: Cas is the calm, goofy and witty one of the four! He likes to joke around, keep things chill, and even flirt a bit with Anna. He reminded me so much of Jules from The Revenants trilogy by Amy Plum. (LAST BOOK COMES OUT IN MAY, OMG.) *Coughs. Okay, I apologize. I'll stop.
Nick: Nick is the total asshole. Just plain and simple, no way to describe it. However, he does have his reasons, and in the end, you do see him show another side totally distinct to his aggressive personality.
This book never seized to take me by surprise! I often found myself at the end of each chapter, mouth open, yelling, "OH. EMM. GEE." These turns and twists really attracted me to the story, and forced me too keep reading. I just couldn't wait to figure out what else Rush had in store! You find out a lot of interesting things about THE BOYS and the branch. It is a mysterious and thrilling world to be in and I absolutely enjoyed every bit and piece of this novel!
I am so excited for the sequel which comes out in... not sure and I'm too lazy to look it up at the moment. (Sorry.) Anyways, I totally recommend this book to anyone out there looking for an action-packed, romantic, dark, sexy read. THERE ARE FOUR HOT GUYS FOR CRYING OUT LOUD. You definitely need to pick this book up!
Okay, that's not five stars. BUT STILL. My emotions are currently uncontrollable for this book.
