Shattered Souls Book Review

Synopsis: A thrilling debut story of death, love, destiny, and danger

Lenzi hears voices and has visions - gravestones, floods, a boy with steel gray eyes. Her boyfriend, Zak, can't help, and everything keeps getting louder and more intense. Then Lenzi meets Alden, the boy from her dreams, who reveals that she's a reincarnated Speaker - someone who can talk to and help lost souls - and that he has been her Protector for centuries.

Now Lenzi must choose between her life with Zak and the life she is destined to lead with Alden. But time is running out: a malevolent spirit is out to destroy Lenzi, and he will kill her if she doesn't make a decision soon.

My Reactions/Thoughts: I completely enjoyed this novel all the way through. I loved the characters, the plot, and the overall concept of the Speaker and Protector relationship between Alden and Lenzi. Ahh, Alden. I absolutely adored him. He was caring, hot, protective, (thus explaining his roll as a "Protector") and overall a well developed character. Lenzi, the protagonist, was also well established, confident, and a strong female character. I enjoyed her overall development in the story for Lenzi as well. In the beginning, she was experiencing the loss of her father, as well as major confusion and fear of the voices. She thinks she is crazy just like her father. But when Alden comes along, things begin to change, and she soon discovers who she really was, and what her future holds for her.

The book was set in Houston Tx, my hometown, and where I am still living. I absolutely adored that! I was so familiar with the locations, such as Galveston, Kemah, and even some other restaurants that are mentioned. It allowed me to become more attached to the story, as well as picture myself there. I haven't read a story yet that was set in Houston, so I was really drawn to that. (Am I being a little biased? I hope not, lol.)

The romantic triangle that is present actually wasn't too much. I really liked it. You see, Lenzi has a boyfriend. His name is Zak. So far, their relationship has been fantastic, and Zak really loves her. However, once Alden appears, things begin to take a turn. Lenzi finds herself instantly attracted to him. An attraction that she has never felt before. Not even with Zak. That is because Alden is Lenzi's Protector. They have actually known each other for centuries, throughout their past lives. However, Lenzi doesn't remember. As the story begins to deepen, Lenzi is shown memories of the past by Alden, in which she is able to get a sense of who she was before. Rose. That was her name in the past. Although Alden is a static character, Lenzi is the dynamic character in the story due to the many changes and phases that she goes through. I REALLY enjoyed that.

There is an evil spirit that is determined to kill Lenzi, and has even attempted to do so in the past. Whenever he appears in the story, it brings forth action, fear, and just the right amount of evil that the story needed. This is where Lenzi's skills are put to the test, in which not only her life, but the life of others, are put into danger. Will she succeed? You just have to read.

Overall, Shattered Souls was an amazing story that had me on the edge of my seat. I couldn't put the book down, and found myself flipping through every page with excitement, and curiosity!

When it comes to my rating, I, without a doubt, give this book a 5 star. I just absolutely loved it! I will definitely be reading the sequel whenever it comes out.
